Mulled white wine

If you are not into the heavy mulled red wine or would like to make a non-alcoholic mulled wine, then you should try this recipe for white mulled wine with apple juice. You first make an essence, and then you can choose whether you want to serve it with rum and white wine or as apple mulled wine without alcohol. Both taste absolutely amazing.

Apple mulled wine – non-alcoholic or with white wine

The recipe for this mulled wine extract is pretty straightforward. When it’s finished, you can choose whether to use it to serve an alcohol-free mulled wine, then you make it with only apple juice, or you want to serve it with rum and white wine, so you get a white mulled wine with alcohol.

Mulled wine without alcohol is an advantage if there are children who want taste or adults who need to drive home. Then it is okay to grab a refill.

This mulled wine is sweet and delicious and can be served traditionally with almonds and raisins, or like it is here, decorated with star anise and cinnamon sticks. It gives the most beautiful Christmas scent of licorice and cinnamon.

How to make apple mulled wine?

The first thing to do is to cook the mulled wine extract. For that you will need:

  • Apple juice
  • Cane sugar
  • Lemons
  • Orange
  • Cardamom capsules
  • Vanilla
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Star anise
  • Cloves
  • Peppercorns
  • Ginger

Everything goes into a large saucepan and cook for an hour under a lid. Once the extract is cooked, pour it into a glass together with all the spices, and then it should sit for 24 hours before you can use it to mix the finished mulled wine. After 24 hours, sieve the spices away, and it’s ready to serve.

Mulled White Wine

If you want to make a Mulled white wine, heat the white wine in a pan until just below the boiling point. Calculate approximately 2 dl of white wine per person. The hot white wine is mixed with 1 dl of mulled wine extract per person, and 1 cl of rum per person, if any. The rum you can omit if you want a milder mulled wine. Add either almonds and raisins, or star anise and cinnamon, and serve the mulled wine.

Non-alcoholic mulled wine

If you want to serve your mulled wine without alcohol, heat up the apple juice in a pan. Approximately 2 dl per person. When hot, add mulled wine extract, about 1 dl per person, and the mulled wine is ready to serve. Put the almonds and raisins in, or garnish with star anise and cinnamon.

Recipe for Apple mulled wine

Here’s our recipe for white mulled wine in a version without alcohol and one with alcohol. Both tastes amazing, but of course, it is preferred without alcohol if there are children or people driving home.

You can easily use the same mulled wine extract to make both versions, so you can easily make mulled wine for both adults and children of the same essence.

Ingredients
  

Mulled wine extract

  • 1 l apple juice
  • 1 dl cane sugar
  • 2 lemons sliced, zest on
  • 1 orange sliced, zest on
  • 12 capsules cardamom
  • 1 beam vanilla
  • 3 sticks cinnamon
  • 6 star anise
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 6 whole peppercorns
  • 4 slices of ginger

For serving – With alcohol

  • 1 dl rom
  • 2 l white wine 2 parts white wine to 1 part mulled wine extract

For serving – Without alcohol

  • 2 l apple juice 2 parts apple juice to 1 part mulled wine extract

For serving

  • Almonds and raisins

Instructions
 

Mulled wine extract

  • Open the vanilla bean and scrape out the grains. Put the seeds, the empty vanilla bean and all the other ingredients for the mulled wine extract in a saucepan and bring to the boil while stirring. Let the mulled wine simmer for 30-60 minutes under a lid. Then let it cool and put it in a glass with a lid. Let the extract soak for a minimum of 1 day before the spices are removed and it is ready to serve.

Mulled white wine (With alcohol)

  • Heat white wine in a saucepan until just below the boiling point. Remove the pan from the heat and mix with the mulled wine extract. The mixing ratio is 2 parts white wine to 1 part mulled wine extract. If you make from 1 liter of mulled wine extract, use 2 liters of white wine.
  • Expect about 2 dl white wine and 1 dl mulled wine extract per person you need to serve mulled wine to.
  • Add 1 cl rum per person or 1 dl if you heat the whole portion at once. You can omit rum if you want a milder mulled wine.
  • Serve immediately – For instance with almonds and raisins or star anis and cinnamon.

Apple mulled wine (Non-alcoholic)

  • Heat the apple juice in a saucepan until just below the boiling point. Remove the pan from the heat and add the mulled wine extract. Use 2 parts apple juice for 1 part mulled wine extract. 2 liters of apple juice if you make mulled wine from all the mulled wine extract.
  • Expect about 2 dl apple juice and 1 dl mulled wine extract per person you are to serve mulled wine to.
  • Serve immediately – For instance with almonds and raisins or star anis and cinnamon.

Tips and tricks for mulled white wine

  • You can customize the spices in your mulled wine extract to the tastes you like and your preferred Christmas spices. Add zest or slices of organic oranges, all spice, or other Christmas flavors.
  • Serve your mulled wine traditionally with almond splitters and raisins, or garnish it like here with cinnamon sticks and star anise – it gives a lovely scent of Christmas.

Mulled wine extract – Mulled wine essens.

The base for good homemade mulled wine is the mulled wine extract, and it should preferably have as much flavor as possible. There is no alcohol in this version as it can also be used for child-friendly mulled wine. If you know that you only want to make plain white mulled wine with alcohol, then you can simply add the rum to the mulled wine essence before it comes on glass to sit for 24 hours.
