Danish curry herring (Curry pickled herring)

Recipe for Danish curry herring
Homemade curry herring with apple, red onion, capers, and dill. These are delicious curry herrings to serve at Easter or Christmas lunch or just as a tasty Sunday lunch with a slice of homemade rye bread and a hard-boiled egg.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 pickled herring fillets about 300 grams
  • 1 dl sour cream
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 apple
  • ½ red onion
  • 2 tbsp capers
  • 2 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 bunch dill

Instructions
 

  • Remove the pickled herring fillets from the brine and let them drain on a piece of kitchen paper.

  • Chop the red onion finely. Cut the apple into small cubes. Chop the capers and dill. Save some of the dill for garnish.

  • Mix sour cream with mayonnaise. Add chopped red onion, apple, capers, and dill, and season with curry, salt, pepper, and sugar.

  • Cut the drained marinated herring fillets into smaller pieces, about 2 cm each. Turn the herring pieces into the curry sauce and garnish with dill and possibly more capers.
  • Serve with rye bread, hard-boiled eggs, and slices of fresh onion.
